THE MOFFATTS Submodalities (EMI) Wow, what a pleasant surprise. No longer full of pubescent sappy angst, The Moffatts have returned older, cuter and, well, better than before. With age comes wisdom, and so does experience. For the boys, that included a star producer, Bob Rock (Bon Jovi, Metallica), taking control and creating a piece of pop-rock magic that is the highlight of their new career as grown musicians. Songs like "Bang Bang Boom" and "California" are such modern rock staples that you can imagine Third Eye Blind and the Wallflowers tearing out these songs on radio. There might've been more style than substance in the beginning of their career, but it's a different story now. Where age popped Hanson's hype balloon, it should help The Moffats coast along a pretty successful ride. Hell, with friends like Bob Rock, how can you go wrong?Debbie Bento

It's a sound the Canadian teens seem made for -- the four brothers have a natural ability to write catchy riffs (Typical), cynical lyrics (Just Another Phase) and Beatlesque melodies. (OK, so the quartet did have some help from producer Bob Rock and others.) Even still, their songs are not quite tough enough to get played on Edmonton radio station The Bear, but hopefully The Moffatts will help put an end to the pop schmaltz reign of their fellow boy bands.
